Sanibel sits east-to-west, like a net across the Gulf's currents — which is why its beaches collect more shells than almost anywhere in the world. Whelks, tulips, cockles, angel wings, and the occasional prized junonia wash up daily. You'll recognize fellow collectors by the "Sanibel Stoop."
Go an hour either side of low tide, or right after a storm. Bring one of our mesh bags, rinse your finds at the outdoor shower, and if you get hooked, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum up-island puts your haul in perspective.
